지난 8일 버지니아 의회에서는 마크 김 전 버지니아 주 하원의원의 공적을 기리는 결의안 HR281 (Commending the Honorable Mark Lee Keam) 이 채택되었다.
버지니아 400년 역사상 첫 아시안 주 하원으로 7선을 지낸 마크 김 전 의원의 후임자인 할리 사이볼드(Holly Seibold VA35)의원이 결의안을 발표했고 민주 공화 양당의 많은 의원들이 그의 공로에 대한 존경을 표했다.
결의안은 “존경받는 공무원, 변호사, 공보 전문가인 김 전 의원은 약 13년 동안 버지니아 하원의원으로 재직하면서 주민들에게 상당한 공헌을 해왔으며, 헌신과 리더십을 보여주어 버지니아주에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤고, 그의 뛰어난 업적에 대한 증거가 되고, 지역 사회에 대한 그의 공헌과 헌신을 인정한다”라고, 밝혔다..
마크 김 전 의원은 페이스북을 통해 “이렇게 인정받게 되어 영광이었지만, 프레젠테이션 중에 몇몇 전직 동료들이 일어서서 나를 기리기 위해 이야기하는 것을 보고 완전히 충격을 받았다며, 마치 내 장례식에 참석한 것 같은 기분이 들었다”
“전혀 필요하지 않은 일임에도 불구하고 많은 전 하원 의원들이 저에게 공개적으로 따뜻하게 인사해 주셨고, 사적으로도 저와 함께 일해주셔서 감사하다는 말씀을 해주셔서 감사하다”
“주 정부에서 이웃을 대표하는 것은 내 인생의 가장 큰 영광이었고, 정부와 우리 주 정책을 형성하기 위해 열심히 일하는 민간 및 공공 부문의 훌륭한 친구들을 많이 사귀게 된 것을 정말 축복으로 생각한다”
“우리 기관에 대한 많은 사람들의 신뢰가 낮고 당파적 논쟁과 사소한 싸움이 우리의 국가적 관심을 너무 많이 차지하고 있는 이 시기에, 나는 정당한 이유로 영연방을 위해 봉사하기 위해 무대에 남아 있는 이들에게 박수를 보낸다”라고 밝혔다.
HR 281 – Commending the Honorable Mark Lee Keam
WHEREAS, the Honorable Mark Lee Keam, an esteemed public servant, attorney, and public affairs professional, greatly served the citizens of the Commonwealth as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates for nearly 13 years; and
WHEREAS, Mark Keam was born in Seoul, South Korea, and lived with his family in Australia for some time before ultimately settling in Orange County, California; and
WHEREAS, Mark Keam earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Irvine, in 1989, followed by a juris doctor degree from what is now the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco, in 1995; and
WHEREAS, after serving as United States Senator Richard J. Durbin’s chief counsel from 2001 to 2007, Mark Keam served as the senior advisor for strategic alliances with the telecommunications company Verizon from 2007 to 2015; and
WHEREAS, Mark Keam was elected to serve as the delegate for the 35th District in the Virginia House of Delegates in 2009, becoming the first Korean American and Asian-born immigrant to be elected to a state-level office in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, after being sworn into office on January 13, 2010, Mark Keam worked tirelessly to represent his constituents and their interests in the Virginia House of Delegates, advancing several measures over the years to promote environmental justice and reform, including the Virginia Environmental Justice Act and the Solar Freedom Act, as well as other important causes; and
WHEREAS, in 2021, Mark Keam co-founded the Asian American and Pacific Islander Caucus in the General Assembly to develop and support legislation and policies that enhance support and protections for the Asian American and Pacific Islander community in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Mark Keam announced his retirement from the Virginia House of Delegates on September 6, 2022, after accepting a position as deputy assistant secretary leading the National Travel and Tourism Office within the International Trade Administration of the United States Department of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, Mark Keam has received numerous honors in recognition of his leadership and service, including a 2020 Fairfax County Environmental Excellence Award and accolades from the Virginia League of Conservation Voters and the Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Honorable Mark Lee Keam hereby be commended for his legacy of service as a member of the House of Delegates; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honorable Mark Lee Keam as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for his contributions to the Commonwealth.
